Race Hate Scam

On the same theme, a Race hate scam was uncovered on national tv this week as the husband of high-profile Liberal MP Jackie Kelly and a senior official of the party are among those accused by Labor of involvement in the scandal, which has erupted with just two days to go before Australians go to the polls on Saturday.

The Liberal Party is in damage control after the exposure of a dirty tricks campaign in a key marginal seat, where pamphlets designed to tap into anti-Muslim sentiment were distributed by party volunteers.

Labor’s national campaign director, Tim Gartrell, has complained to the Australian Electoral Commission about three men: Jeff Egan, who is a member of the Liberals’ NSW executive, Gary Clark, the husband of Ms Kelly, and Troy Craig, president of a community action group in the southern Sydney electorate of Lindsay.

The pamphlet at the centre of the scandal was attributed to the fictitious “Islamic Australia Federation”, and purportedly urged a vote for Labor because of its support for Muslim causes.

“We gratefully acknowledge Labor’s support to forgive our Muslim brothers who have been unjustly sentenced to death for the Bali bombings,” the pamphlet says.

“Labor is the only political party to support the entry to this country of our Grand Mufti Reverend Sheik al-Hilaly and we thank Honourable Paul Keating for overturning the objections of ASIO to allow our Grand Mufti to enter this country.”

It also purported to call for the building of more mosques in a part of Sydney where an existing mosque proposal has recently been the subject of controversy.

The ABC’s Lateline last night aired a photograph of Ms Kelly’s husband, an orthodontist, hiding behind one of the leaflets.

Labor frontbencher Penny Wong described the incident as “a dirty trick” and “a clear breach” of electoral laws. “What I’m saying is it appears people who are very senior within the NSW division of the Liberal Party are involved,” she said.

Lost records

Gordon Brown has ordered security checks on all government departments to ensure data is properly protected after the loss of 25m child benefit records. Under the plans, the Information Commissioner will be given powers to carry out spot checks – a move previously rejected by ministers.

The Revenue and Customs data on the two missing discs includes names, dates of birth, bank and address details.

During a heated prime minister’s questions session, Mr Brown told MPs: “I profoundly regret and apologise for the inconvenience and worries that have been caused to millions of families who receive child benefits.

What were twenty five million people’s details doing on two discs? And why are they being transported together?

Surely that sort of information should be kept under a strict armed guard at all times.

Perhaps Revenue and Customs are planning on boosting the economy by implementing a Doomsday scenario where they make everyone’s records available to everyone.

In true fashion, a scam website was instantly set up claiming that people could buy the records for $29.95, only for patrons to find that they could not access the alleged file.

There will be a lot of people changing their bank details this weekend. It is a shame that this will be pointless as their identities can still be stolen with the National Insurance number.

And Finally…

It is Movember once again.

Movember is a tradition in Australia where during the month of November, participating men grow a moustache, or a Mo as it is known here, hence Movember.

Men are sponsored and the proceeds go towards prostate research.

Good on you Australia.
