04.11.16 – National Pride

If ever there was a time when you could buy something with the Bajan flag on it, that time is now.

On 30.11.16 Barbados will celebrate 50 years of independence, and there is certainly a sense of national pride around the island.

From flags of every size, lapel badges, t-shirts and other apparel, to plates, signs, and banners, Barbados is displaying its pride in full effect.

Shops are decking their staff out in special 50th year polo shirts and people are finding different combinations of blue, yellow, and black to wear on the streets.

The newspaper here showed that Bajans in the UK are also entering into the independence spirit, as they also wear their colours with pride, at the Notting Hill Carnival, and in the run up to the main event.

Barbados has released a national collaboration song that has all it biggest stars singing a line of the lyrics.

Barbados has also issued a re-vamped version of the national anthem sung by members of the public as well as choirs and famous singers.

I do no think that I have seen this level of national pride inside Barbados.

But yet when I ask my family members whether they will be attending the re-enactment of the independence night where the broken trident was raised for the first time, I am met with apathy, and told that the whole thing will be on tv anyway.

They have built a platform and flag stand on the oval outside the Garrison on the sight of where the first flag was raised.
