23.11.16 – The changing race of 50

My local beach is a small secluded cove which does have a few hotels and guest houses on it, but not enough to overwhelm the beach with tourists.

However over the past few weeks I have watched white pale skinned or sun burnt occupants of the rooms in the hotels and guest houses be replaced by groups of returning national men, women, and families, all around the age of 50.

They have all come in for the 50th anniversary of Barbados independence on 30.11.16, and to be part of the celebrations laid on at the great expense of $7 million.

Returning nationals are flooding into the country to the point that hire cars are now completely sold out, and renting at a premium.

“Hello, where are you from, have you come in for the 50th” is now the regular greeting from shop and restaurant owners alike.

Party boats like the Jolly Roger and the Buccaneer are no longer filled with under-dressed, and barely dressed white tourists, but with smartly dressed returning nationals, locals and their families, out to enjoy the start of the festive period.
